Geocaching adventures

Then on the 27th, I did 38 geocaches in one day - 26 of which were on the APM challenge route - one cache representing each Prime Minister Australia has had so far. I found all of them and another dozen extras. The photo below was taken near one of the side trips - I couldn't get further back to take a wider photo, the banks were steep and a bit treacherous-looking. Not many creeks have water in them at this time of year. There were other nice and unusual things to see along the way - I saw a lot of cellar beetles (harmless, sometimes kept as pets (not by me, thanks)) and thistles that had grown improbably large. I had no idea they got that big. I also learnt a lot about driving on dirt roads with loose surfaces - particularly about acceleration and steering. Fear not, no disasters. Just a few interesting learning experiences. The roads were very quiet - most people stick to the sealed roads. I was exhausted at the end of the day but it was quite an adventure!

This is a travel bug - I've got it ready for a new geocache I'm placing. I'm awaiting review so there's a chance it won't make it but I really hope this one does go through :D I'm rather pleased with it. Only time will tell though :)

Early nineties extremely American version of Trivial Pursuit - we were playing around with the question cards late at night. Sometimes the questions are more fun than the answers :D

Today I did some geocaching, placed a new geocache, and picked up the new Dresden Files Fool Moon comic hardcover bindup from Pulp Fiction Comics. It's very, very pretty :D

Last night I was having more "fun" with the connection here so two days in one hit again. I took this photo while out geocaching - I was waiting for people in the other direction to disappear so I could thoroughly examine something without looking absurdly suspicious.

Also, someone at work was taking part in a mango fundraiser. I split a box with another friend from work - already eaten one. It was delicious. The rest will ripen over the next week or so then face similar fates.

I learned to solve another kind of sudoku today - I got the hang of it fairly quickly. What you see here, (modified to remove numbers as it's a geocache puzzle) is my first false-start. I didn't get too far and made a minor error. Second time went a lot better but about 2/3 the way through I made an error - the GPS co-ordinates produced by the puzzle were impossible. Once I worked out what the error was I was able to backtrack to just before that. Most sudoku don't really allow that, but because of the method of solving this I was using this kind of puzzle allows it. Anyhow. Third time I got it out without any particular difficulties. I put the co-ordinates through a checker and it turns out I was right :D I shall have to go find it soon...

Also, had dinner with my parents. Mum made a thoroughly awesome lasagne.

After a fantastic bacon-eggs-and-everything-else-too breakfast and a spot of geocaching in Jamestown I started heading back towards Adelaide. This photo is taken along a road in the Bundaleer area where I was doing more geocaching - shortly after I took this panorama shot I took a walk all the way to the very top of the hill in this photo. The view up there was spectacular but photos just don't do it justice. I can definitely recommend the climb though! It's not as bad as it looks - there's a path part of the way up that isn't too steep and the rest of the time I walked along the ridge of the hill. A bit longer, but not nearly so steep!

After finishing up caching in the area I continued home, stopping for two more caches further on, to visit a cellar door and to take a ride on a miniature train at the Hobbies Alive festival in Clare - I saw the signs as I was passing through town and thought it might be fun to check it out. The train in question was a fantastic replica of the old Glenelg trams. There were quite a few other trains including one absolutely stunning little steam engine which had stopped to top up on water and coal while I was at the station. The drive home was beautiful - the weather was much better than yesterday and it made the drive a pleasure. I must do this again...

Today I went to a geocaching halloween party and met a bunch of geocachers and had some cachey fun. In other awesome news, it's my 500th photo-a-day post. Woah O.o

After a busy day at work yesterday I had a great day. I went to the Wittunga Botanical Gardens for geocaching and lunch, stopped by another cache I'd had trouble with in the past (it turned out to be my 150th), then to the city for afternoon tea, and onward to dinner...

I had a kangaroo and strawberry salad. I was feeling adventurous so just thought... why not? I'm not sure I'd pick it again, but it wasn't bad and was a very unusual flavour combination. The cider, on the other hand, was excellent. I'll be having that one again!

Lego Vader had his territory invaded, so he's on his skeleton horse chasing off Jack Sparrow, who should know better but will probably never learn.

Went to get Lego Pirates today, turns out the only one they had left was a preorder special edition that hadn't been picked up, and at the same price as the standard edition. :D

Also, I went caching, two successes but I wasn't willing to continue to scramble around a quarry in Mitcham when the light was fading.

Sometimes geocaching has you doing strange things. Like moving wheelie bins to climb onto them to reach caches. Such a situation may have been encountered in this alleyway... had this happened I might, theoretically, have felt really strange and conspicuous. Eh-heh.

The important thing... mission accomplished.

(if your monitor brightness is low the photo may appear... very black)

This photo was taken whilst geocaching in suburban Sydney with Astrobia and Anon. One of two waterfalls passed in the search for a cache (found with some scrambling on rocks). Every city should have waterfalls in it.

This is Aa Bailey Reserve, once upon a time a horse paddock for a nearby hotel.

So I was here earlier today averaging waypoints and such things. Because I'm awesome like that.

Well, today I finished making and placing my first geocache. Here you have the container and initial contents. It's not available on geocaching.com yet. But soon it will be.

It's a bit of a thrill, to be honest ^.^;

Today was quite eventful! My netball team won the semi-final! I played three quarters in WA and had the best run I've had in ages! Really looking forward to the Grand Final next week. I don't know who we're playing, but the team's been performing amazingly lately.

I did my 100th geocache and a several others before and after. I must have walked between five and ten kilometres (or more?) in the space of five and a half hours - very enjoyable.

This flower was grown in our garden - despite many photo-worth events and beautiful places discovered today, I didn't have a camera with me. I might have to take one into the North East area of the parklands some day. There are some really nice places in there.

Today, as I have mentioned on facebook, I got myself a most excellent new device - https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=63801 and a set of maps with pretty darn good coverage of Australia and NZ. There will be caching. MUCH caching. I suppose I could have taken a picture of the GPS unit, but...

But also on my city trip I saw this little doorway, about eight inches high, and thought it was far more fascinating a thing to show. I'd seen one of these elsewhere in the city a couple years ago, but that one has since disappeared, though you can see where it was glued in place. Truly wonderful things to find, these little doors. I am aware of at least one more too! Little finds like this really put a smile on your face :D

So all in all, work was good, shopping was good, geocaching was great, so I think today was most excellent!

Went out geocaching again with Amy and Barnaby. I went out in the morning intending on doing a few and phoned to ask if they wanted to join me - turns out they had similar plans, so we did a large part of linear park.

One cache involved a vertical challenge. Barnaby appears to be related to Spiderman.

Laelia's 30th was tonight too, though I couldn't stay dreadfully late it seemed to be going well - Happy Birthday Laelia :D

(Now I am totally exhausted and must get to bed. Back to work tomorrow!

Well here I am at my 200th photo!

Today was a really fantastic day weather-wise so I took advantage of it! I went on a picnic up to Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens with my parents - we had a lovely wander around. The gardens are really fantastic at the moment, no doubt in part because of the large amounts of rainfall recently. This afternoon I went on a bike riding treasure hunt... it was also much fun.

Very tired now though, so I must go to bed. More treasure-seeking tomorrow as the weather is set to stay fantastic.

Did some geocaching with my sister and her fiance today, then, as it was still early, went out and did some of my own as well.

The first session led to an encounter with a koala wandering down the street - quick! Stop the car! Where's the camera? But that's already made it onto the internet.

So I bring you one of the many subspecies of black cockatoo, most of which are really rare. Whilst approaching a cache site I disturbed a small flock of these. As is typical, they're MUCH bigger than the more common sulphur-crested cockatoos. They settled in another pine tree nearby where I was able to snap a couple of pictures.

Made for a good day but I'm worn out now!
