Roses!

One of the things I missed most when I moved here was having roses in the garden - Mum and Dad got me a rose for Christmas but as it was well into the flowering season I didn't expect to see any until October - but when I went to water the rose this morning I found a bud! There's another smaller one too. I'm thrilled to bits! I'm very much looking forward to this one opening up in the near future.

This has been a very bloggy weekend but I had to share this. Now I'm off to work - I've been called in and must get moving!

A bit of a catch-up I'm afraid. Apologies for all of this in one hit. These were the fish at the restaurant the other night. I'm not sure how well you can tell but some of the fish in there are HUGE.

Sunday night we went down to the beach after dinner - probably should have been all responsible and headed straight home but... it was so NICE there!

Aaaaand this is Amy and Barnaby's veggie patch. It's coming along quite well I think :D

I spent most of the day relaxing - a day off is a wonderful thing... this is a flower from Mum and Dad's garden - I dropped over there this evening. There's always something looking great there.

Out for two meals today - with Mum and Dad and with the Grant family. I am spoilt :)

I managed to do some geocaching too, which was very nice. I had a great walk around the Prospect area and treated myself to a coffee and a macaron in a very nice cafe.

Mum's cacti have the most amazing flowers at the moment. These are ENORMOUS. At least hand sized, if not more (depends a bit on the hands in question I suppose)

Not much to say tonight I'm afraid! Today was a very domestic kind of a day - washing, grocery shopping and such.

After one housemate had mowed the lawns the 240L green wheelie bin was pretty close to full - prior to mowing it had been empty. I swear it hadn't been that long since the last mowing! The weather's been very good for the lawn though. I guess it got enthusiastic.

Had dinner and played cards with Mum and Dad. So... this being October there's another rose photo. I really must see to getting some rose bushes here. I think patio roses in pots might be the way to go.

With a nice round number I'm back to single day posts. And Happy Birthday Meredith (and others, four birthdays in one day? Wow!).

I took this while we were visiting Mum and Dad - the rose is past it's best but I love the way this photo turned out all the same. Dad cooked a fantastic BBQ and Mum made fabulous salads. They make a formidable BBQ team...

Also, I got the willow pattern crockery out of the roof and it's now ready to be used. Feeling a bit nostalgic seeing it again.

Monday and Tuesday, I'm into this week at last...

Monday was a stunning day - warm but not hot, and glorious sunshine. I headed down to visit Mum and Dad and to do my washing. While I was there I spent quite a lot of time in the garden - I think I appreciate it all the more now that I'm not there every day. I got some lovely photos, but this is my favourite. I spotted a dead flower wedged in between two branches. When I pulled it out this little guy. As far as I can tell he's a leafhopper in the family/group/order/something flatidae. Whatever he is he's gorgeous. Mum helped me get a good photo - it took a few tries to get the focus just where I wanted it but it was good practice for manual focusing and using my superzoom camera (Sony DSC HX100V) for extreme closeups. One of the brightest points in a very good day.

This lamp sat around in my old room for ages - when Dad was repairing appliances sometimes things didn't get picked up. There were may reasons - didn't want to pay, forgot, moved overseas... attempts to contact the original owner of this lamp failed so I bought it from Dad - I loved the lamp but had no idea what to do with it at the time. Now it's perfect!

Today it's more catchup, with a substantial dose of sisterly pride. Tuesday and Wednesday...

After work on Tuesday I went by home (home-where-parents-are as opposed to home-where-I-live-now, and keeping those distinct is all kinds of fun) to pick up a few things I'd forgotten - office chair, towels, that kind of thing (how I forgot an item of furniture I may never know) and took a picture of one of the roses.

On Wednesday Amy graduated from her Bachelor of Arts with majors in German and Classics. Music degree to follow shortly. That should give us another opportunity to be very proud of her :)

This photo's had a little personal details privacy edit but an unmodified version still exists, fear not.

It's been a busy workish kind of a day and to be honest, I'm not sure that you really want to hear a blow by blow account of the cataloguing I did today. So instead, have some orchids from the garden!

The first roses are blooming! I noticed the first rose of the season late this evening and took a photo under the security lighting using Dad, my fabulous hand model.

The flash was way too powerful to get the shot, but this one came out okay. I'll get some nicer shots another time - I can't help but wander about taking photos of roses when they're in bloom. It's some kind of strange compulsion.

I'm going to miss this garden when I've moved out. Of course, I'll come back to visit it often!

These flowers only last a day, they grow on one of the fastest-growing trees I know. They remind me a little of the hibiscus we used to have - except that was pink and more uh... hibiscus-shaped.

I did a little sewing tonight but I tend to think that my photos of the garden are so much nicer than a partly-finished hand sewing project...

I was woken twice by thunder and once by a sudden heavy downpour last night. But the weather cleared up (though more rain is forecast).

It's still very springy, though the daffodils have finished. There are some small buds on the roses now too, I'm hoping it'll be another good year for them!

And it's clearly a good day for this really fuzzy butterfly. I hope you can see the detail as well as I can in the original file!

This azalea used to be outside of my bedroom window - it's been relocated now but still gets covered in lovely pink flowers.

Today I saw my sister for the first time since I got back - we baked savoury muffins, then B joined us and we watched some firefly and the new episode of Doctor Who. All quite a pleasant evening :D

More spring photos! This is the Japanese Maple in the back garden just starting to get new leaves, it's a stunning tree (except after a heatwave when it's just a crispy tree) that just gets better every year.

Today was the most wonderful spring day with clear skies, gentle warmth and sunshine. Going out to hang the washing was a pleasure. In the front garden it smelt exactly like I imagine spring - a fabulous flowery perfume.

The manchurian pears are absolutely covered in blossoms and the bees are having a wonderful time taking advantage of the opportunity!

Did I mention the Orchids are having an exceptional year? I'll miss running around taking pictures of the garden while I'm on holiday, but I'm sure more variety in the photos can only be good. Oh yeah... Singapore has orchids... and I'm not too concerned about people knowing I'm away, for the record. I don't live alone, and persons whom I live with are not coming with me.
