I've seen bead and button closures before and wanted to give them a go - and today I had a chance to do just that. I've made five of these bracelets so far, all have buttons for closures, all bar the one shown use beads for the main strand. I thought that by using really nice buttons here the closure could be a feature instead of just being functional.
Of course, since then I've had an idea to improve them - though I'm not sure it'll work with the button version as I use a different threading material and method to make them sit the way I want.
Do you like these? Some of them are gifts, but not all... I hope to do proper photography of them later in the week.

Taking a decent picture of your wrist with an SLR lens whose macro setting only works at full zoom (90mm) is harder than you'd think...
This one came out okay but for another I resorted to using my other camera - it still takes a good shot, and doesn't require any zoom to be used until using "super macro". No manual focus but I managed to make it work.
:D the rose on this bracelet is one of my favourite op-shop finds. I bought quite a few of these in packs, but sadly some of them are not in terribly good condition. This one, however, is great. I'm looking forward to thinking up different projects for the other rose buttons. I love that part :D

I bought a rather ugly seventies necklace at an op-shop the other day (it's pictured below). Despite ugliness, it did have some nice cage beads on it. So I cut a couple of them loose and turned them into a pair of earrings. Hooray for upcycling! I think they look a whole lot better now.
( Ugly necklace )
I also made a couple more bracelets, I'll put them on etsy and my related facebook page soon. I'm thrilled with the way they came out, but I need better light for etsy photography!
P.S. The facebook page was linked here a couple days ago and can be re-linked if anyone wants it. Please do like the page, and invite anyone you think might be interested. When I reach 50 fans of the page I'll be giving away something to a randomly selected fan of the page :)

I think I have to agree that my lego skeleton horse is indeed a thestral. That said, I was a bit concerned to find this tonight. What should I make of it?
P.S. To those on here and not on facebook... I made my first etsy sale today - one of my handmade bracelets. I'm thrilled to bits. It's a fantastic step forward for me.

Sure enough, I've readied the parts for another baby ball. All of a sudden so very many people are having children!
At the end of the month I can report back on my New Year's Resolutions
1- 4 geocaches per month. Achieved several times over.
2- at least 1 new etsy listing per month. Achieved with more items ready to go
3- 1 letter/parcel per month - written if not sent. Want to step this one up next month.
So one month down, eleven to go...

The above link is to my etsy store. It's up and going with some earrings again, and the bracelet above is one of three I have fully photographed and ready to be uploaded. I've got others made too, I will keep them trickling up to etsy... and will keep you informed.
I also intend on getting twitter and facebook page stuff running, just have to work out how I'll go about that.

I had no work today (don't worry, the weekend's more than making up for it) so I got some crafting done. Pretty well everything I worked on is a gift - though there was one repair that's not really photo material - so I figured the gift for the yet unborn (unless anything's happened very, very recently) is the safest option.
This will be a baby ball made with the requested 'geeky' theme. I decided to go with co-ordinated fabrics this time, and I think robots (sometimes in space) ought to be suitably geeky :). I made good progress today, I'd say it's a little under half done, but it won't take twice the time put into it so far, as I experimented with a different technique that I thought might yield great results, however partway in I threw it down on the table in frustration - though the results at that point were looking good the paper sections that, at this point, are very necessary, were all coming loose, and the only way of ensuring they would stay put meant using a more traditional technique... which I'm doing now. Without the paper pieces the stitching quickly got nasty. Having made a ball with this more traditional technique before I know it'll be fine, I'll experiment with variations on the technique another time, maybe on a hexagon pattern which sits FLAT. As the not-flatness is where I came unstuck.
Enormous thanks to Mum for helping me when the frustration almost got too much... her patience far eclipses my own and she re-tacked the paper pieces, allowing me to get back on track with the stitching.
All of the stitching that's visible at the moment will be removed by the time this is finished, the real structural stitching is almost invisible.
Pardon me if this is semi-coherent and babbly, I'm not feeling very competent with words tonight.

I still find it amusing that this roll of fabric is called a jelly roll... naming for different packs of fabric is strange. Layer Cakes, bali pops...
I don't like to use these so much myself, I tend to prefer to cut my own fabrics from a larger piece. That said, I need to find a new blade for the rotary cutter...
And yes, I left it a bit last minute to take a photo. How could you tell?

Most people were on the right track with yesterday's photo - it was indeed the spine of an old book. It's a leatherbound book, the text block has been marbled. It was a book of attendance for a closed branch of an organisation that Dad is involved in. The first entry in the book is dated 1953.
Today Mum and Dad returned from Tasmania. It sounds like they had a great time! They bought me chocolate... and buttons! Some of them are shown above. I think my favourites are the set of three dark blue buttons that are all a bit different, yet clearly belong together.

I picked out these fabrics from my collection for a project that I'd better get cracking on! Progress and/or finished shots will follow. I bought these fabrics a while ago simply because I thought they were fantastic... now I've found them a purpose (or at least, bits of them)
Also, I watched Good Morning Vietnam tonight. Well worth the watching. I love how Robin Williams can mix the serious and hilarious so effectively.

An earring I made this morning. As there's a technique in there I haven't used much before it took quite a while to get it just right. Even so, next time I'd use smaller crimps. I haven't made its partner yet. I think I'll put that off until next year...
Today I thought I'd use a midnight photo, but it occured to me that it'd actually be tomorrow (not to mention next year). I don't want to leave the party to upload an earlier shot then, so instead, here's something I've worked on this morning. I finished the set with the brown necklace from yesterday - I added in an amber crystal and some wire-wrapped loops (I need practice on those x.x) and it has a matching bracelet and earrings.
I suppose it's traditional to do a yearly wrap-up but all I can really say is although I haven't yet achieved some of the things I'm aiming for it's been a good year, and I've learnt a lot about... a lot, despite not actually studying formally at all. I'll keep working on those longer-term goals next year, and I will post my resolutions tomorrow to let you know what else I'd like to achieve.

This is something else I'm working on... it's time consuming but watching the progress is great. To give an idea of scale, the squares on the board measure an inch.
Tomorrow I'll be past the halfway point in this photo-a-day challenge. I'm not sure what to do to mark the occasion. I've got a double shift so I won't have a great deal of time. I guess I'll have to think of something - I'm happy to take suggestions too!

As this photo blog comes half-circle (har har har) if not quite halfway, I can finally show you a project which is no longer in the UFO stage. It's entirely hand-stitched with very, very tiny stitches.
This is a gift, but given the age of the intended recipient, I don't think it'll matter. I really need to make a couple more of these for as yet unborn recipients.

This afternoon and this evening I did some beading - not all of it is shown here though. I'm experimenting with a couple of techniques.
The first, seen in the finished bracelet, is coming out very well and I've found two different ways of getting the same result.
The second, in the two shorter pieces, is being mildly beastly. The first two tries I ended up cutting apart with scissors, the third is the green and gold which is kind of... okay. The most recent is the black and gold which was looking like a dog's breakfast until about four rows in when all of a sudden it decided it was going to work... sadly I don't think I'll have enough of the larger beads to finish it.
I'll try to source more but I've had those beads forever and I have no idea where I got them from.

An Abyssal Fish from "The Modern Reference Encyclopaedia Illustrated" Published by The Advertiser in 1939. I have begun to embroider this picture. Possibly to be part of a much larger project. We'll see. This Encyclopedia really is a fantastic and quite fascinating book, it gives quite a lot of insight into the time - it's interesting to see how much subjectivity of the day comes through. And how far we've come...
Take this rather vile little passage in the section on Australia 'The aborigines, of many tribes, of primitive habits, and a low order of intelligence, are disappearing." The Maoris fare fare better, having an article all to themselves and the description of "well-developed, intelligent and brave".
There is much more, of course, but I'm sure you don't want the whole book quoted to you. And it'd be nice if there was still no entry for 'Atomic Bomb'.

I made fifty little 'ghost pops' tonight for the trick-or-treat that's going on in our street tomorrow night. I modified an idea I saw on another blog a few weeks ago (during a blog-surfing spree so I don't recall which blog) and used cotton thread to tie a tissue over a lollipop... they're kind of cute and a bit of fun.
Thank you to Mum for being an excellent hand model there...
